Eye Doctor

Yesterday we made a trip to the eye doctor. When you are a preemie they pay special attention to your eyes. They want to make sure that everything is developing the way it should and that Garett is able to see well. Garett saw the eye doctor in December, which seems like a long time ago. At that time we were told everything was fine.  I am happy to report again everything is fine with his eyes.  After dilating them and shining all sorts of lights into his eyes we now know Garett does not need glasses. Which in all honesty, I would not have been surprised if he did need glasses! Considering his parents both have glasses, he may eventually be destined for a life of glasses...but not now.  And not until he is 2 1/2 do we have to go back! So it looks like he is in the clear until than.  Hard to imagine 2 1/2 years old is the next time he will see the doctor!

Going to the pool

Today we went to the pool for the first time. We went with is friend, Christian and his mom and dad. It has been hot out here in Colorado (about 99 degrees, but a dry heat!) so we thought it would be a good idea. So, we went to the rec center to swim, and man where there a lot of people there... obviously. Garett was a little unsure of the water at first. Hans dunked him under the water, which made him more unsure of the whole experience. But after awhile he was splashing and seeming to enjoy himself. He even met a 9 year old girl that took quite a liking to him. She played in the water with him for awhile, obviously with close supervision. Overall it was a good day at the pool. But Garett being of true Norwegian/German decent, he could not stay too long in the hot sun. Even after SPF 50, I was a little worried about him turning red quickly. He was the whitest boy there, other than his father! We know Garett had a good time, because by the time we made the 2 minute drive home he was fast asleep. Another new and fun experience with Garett. More to come I know!

The Zoo

Today was Garett's first trip to the zoo. We went with our friends Dave and Deanne. We went in the morning so it wasn't quite so hot! Like most babies at this age, I don't think he noticed most of the animals. I think that he just enjoyed seeing all the people and strollers EVERYWHERE!
When we came up to the bears, he did notice them right in front of him. But, really I am not sure how anyone could have missed the 2 brown bears less than 50 yards form us! He seemed to me interested in them at least!  Him being able to enjoy the bears was worth the price of admission.
At one point Hans had Garett out of the stroller and he stood him on the fence where the goats were. He was much more interested in the feeling of the wood underneath his toes, than any animal near by! I guess that is the age.
Overall, we enjoyed it! He crashed about 3/4 of the way through the zoo. So he missed the giraffes, but there is always next year! I can't imagine how that will be? Probably a little more action and interest than this year!

Grandma comes to babysit

This week Grandma Laurie has been here babysitting while Tricia our nanny is on vacation. It has been nice to have her here, particularily for Garett! Today they went for a trip out, and in classic grandma style he got spoiled. After a trip to Babies R Us he returned with a Johnny Jump Up, a walker and some more toys. I picture Garett going through Babies R Us in the cart and pointing at all the stuff he wants and in the cart it goes!! He needed some new toys, so thanks Grandma Laurie.
With the new toys we have seen tonight a sense of independence in Garett and a sense of displeasure from Lucky. There has already been a couple run ins with the walker and Lucky's paw. It is not so easy to get through a door when there is a jumper in the way either. She is realizing she is now 4th on the totem pole, not 3rd! I think she is relinquishing her position willingly though. No fight yet!!
Garett loves the new found ability to roam the kitchen and pull the towels off the oven and grab at the cupboard doors. We just have to watch he doesn't get too quick and go off the edge in the living room. I am sure that is not too far away either!

9 months old, oh my!

On the 1st of July Garett was 9 months old (6 months adjusted age)! Which I find hard to believe.  In the past week Garett has decided he no longer wants to sleep when we go out to restaurants, malls or anywhere in public, he wants and must be a part of all the action. I suppose it is part of getting older, but I must admit it was nice to have a sleeping baby at a restaurant. But all good things come to an end. Last weekend at Buffalo Wild Wings we had a good hour of him playing and being entertained by toys, napkins and wing containers, but at the 60 minute mark Hans had to quickly finish his beer because Garett hit is "wall." At least we know our limit right?

He also decided he was going to get up on all 4's and being to rock! Yet another sign that he is no longer satisfied being an observer of life. He wants to be part of everything! The thought of Garett crawling is so exciting, but oddly scary too. A friend of mine said, now your life will truly never be the same. Which reminds me, we are going to need to baby proof the house SOON! I don't think Lucky is going to be very excited about the soon to be installed gates on the stairs.

And last night Garett saw his first firework show! Well, he saw part of it. We are not sure if it was the noise of the fireworks or the group of 5 year old girls screaming that scared him. Either way, we saw the lower lip stick out quite often, until Hans took him back to the car to watch the show.  All in all, it went well. We got home, put him to bed and he sleep all night! YEAH!
